Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS is Arizona's oldest and largest nonprofit AIDS service organization providing a combination of prevention, research and wellness support to serve 70 percent of Arizona's nearly 13,000 residents infected with HIV/AIDS who live in Maricopa County. Southwest Center's mission is to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS by preventing the disease, by improving the quality of life for those who are impacted, and by contributing to worldwide research. The Center's clinical trial program has helped to bring 27 of the available 30 HIV/AIDS drugs to market. Since 1988, Southwest Center has been on the front lines addressing a steady increase in the demand for HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, prevention education, wellness support services, and clinical trials to help Arizona men, women and teens impacted by the disease.
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988, 21 years ago. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.
Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS also will be participating in two candlelight services at 7 p.m. in Phoenix; at the Church of the Beatitude on 7th Avenue and Glendale, and at Grace Lutheran Church at 1124 N. 3rd Street.
